It is a clumping bamboo, but here, I would call it an 'open' clumper, meaning that it puts up canes 5 to 6 inches apart as opposed to right next to each other.

It grows as fast as any of my other clumpers, has beautiful 'weeping' or drooping very thin leaves. Once established, it is pretty drought tolerant and loves the heat.

Your zone will probably be better for it than mine, which in it's first season, before it hardened-off, it froze back to the ground, but came back larger the next year.
