Can we do this??

We're totally new to bamboo but love the look and sound of it in the wind. My thought was to build a planter the length of our balcony (about 10 feet) and fill it with some type of bamboo for a privacy screen. We'd like to keep it about 6 feet tall and leave it in the planter over winter. WHat I would like to know from any of you bamboo experts is what type would you recommend and how wide and deep should the planter be...we're going to build it out of wood. Is this a good idea, or am I kidding myself?

Yes... I have my bamboo in a 3' by 12' wood container. You have to build the bugger at least 2' deep (mine is 2.5'). Wood will, of course, rot over time so you will probably have to replace the boards in a few years (unless you use the treated type, but I wouldn't eat the shoots if you plan this). I would suggest Phyllostachys aureosulcata
'Spectabilis' for the color and cool bending of the poles. You will also have to pull the bamboo out after a number of years (cut out the extra/thin it out) in order for the 'boo to look its best. Zone 8 is easy for runners. Clumping bamboo might not work the best in a planter as I hear it can split the planter over time.
