Bambusa vulgaris Vittata is a clumping bamboo and will not run wild. It is safe to plant it in the ground without a rhizome barrier.

Not sure about the temp. It is listed as cold hardy to 30F, so it will definitely live, but may get some leaf damage on colder nights. It may need some extra protection in Winter until it reaches some size.

Hi Kt, I'm not so sure I agree with the hardiness rating. Mine died to the ground at 34 degrees here.

Zadal, you might want to try B. eutuldoides 'Viridivittata' or B. pervariabilis 'Viridistriatus' both which are more cold hardy but look similar.
