For running bamboo, how old do rhizomes need to be before they start putting out shoots? Or, in other words, will rhizome that grew this winter produce shoots or does it have to mature for some period of time?

We have a grove of Castillon that is putting up shoots like crazy, but not exactly where we'd like to see them.
