need fast growing bamboo that gets big

Hello All

I'm wondering what type of bamboo I can get that grows FAST, DENSE and TALL. Here's why...

Our yard is just a little over 3/4 acre, and is rather narrow, but about 300' long. We have zero privacy, despite having about 25 large trees and 15 or so smaller ones. All the foliage is up high. Surrounded on all sides by other houses. Nearly all our trees are white oak and pine. They are mostly around the perimeter but there is a "fairway" of sorts down the middle of the back yard with a wide open area along the back of the property. The rearmost open area stays a bit moist as it partially along a drainage easement.

I'm thinking of planting bamboo in this open area to create privacy, absorb a little excess moisture and help reduce noise (the interstate is just beyond the street behind ours).

I'm looking for bamboo that grows FAST & BIG - taller the better. What varieties should I look for and where might I find them?

A good bamboo for what youÂre trying to accomplish is Phyllostachys nigra ÂHenonÂ. It is the hardiest of all timber bamboos and matures quickly.

Consider these two non-invasive varieties:

Robust Clumping Bamboo - Vigorous, non-invasive clumping bamboo, can reach 12-17Â tall, 4Â wide. Narrow, upright growth habit with dark green leaves on light green stems. Able to withstand cold winters and windy conditions showing minimal leaf stress. Versatility to grow well in sun or shade.

Rufa Clumping Bamboo Â Non-invasive, clumping bamboo, gently weeping habit, reaching 8-10Â tall, 6Â wide. Elegant fountain-like growth, narrow green leaves. Wonderful choice for those wanting the ornamental grass look in a part-shade location. Clump sheaths are reddish-brown.

You could try P. Bisetii, it's very fast growing, makes a great hedge too. Shoots are edible.
