Thinning out Moso

I have a young grove of Moso that seems to be growing great. I have some new shoots this year of about and inch and a half. What I would like to know is when should it be thinned of the smaller shoots and how to go about doing this. I started with one small plant 4 years ago and I thought it died so the following year I purchased a larger plant and the smaller on started growing also. I am afraid to mess with what seems to be a healthy little grove. Thanks Jane

I start thinning out of smaller/older culms a couple of years following transplant once the newer, taller culms start to shade out of older, shorter ones. Usually I thin in winter when the grove is dormant, using a pruing saw to cut them off at ground level.
