How much watering do you do and how much wind do you get?

Mine looked the same after the first year coming out of winter. Less water (I let them go dry too much), and did not water prior to a light frost!
kudzu9 may have more info, or maybe I missed something back then as well, but they are ok now, and I always water in the winter now! and yes wind plays a big roll in leaf damage

I am in Allen TX and we have gotten a lot of rain lately.. does your plantings have the right soil for water drainage? Looks like water damage to me.. just my guess but thats what I see.. boo wont grow in water or water logged soil..

Mine look like that here in South Texas. That is typical for this time of the year. Mine are shedding some leaves now and beginning to put on new ones.

Thank you so much for the replies. I live in S. Fort Worth and it is ALWAYS windy here. We have nothing but clay in the backyard, but as I needed to put down a root barrier, I dug a hole about three feet deep, placed the barrier and then filled with new soil (compost and landscaping mix). Then I've thrown in a bit of fertilizer (twice now). The bamboo was planted this past summer, so this is its first spring since planting. It is shooting fairly well.

BUT, even thought the soil the boo is in should be good and drain well, it has to drain into the clay below. I have been concerned that the bottom of this enclosure is waterlogged. Is there any way for me to confirm or correct this? I haven't watered the bamboo much. I've taken to sticking a finger all the way into the soil to feel moisture levels. The only time I have watered it is if it felt pretty dry. It gets hot here, so I feel like the sun is burning the leaves, and the roots get waterlogged?
