Newbie Bamboo Flowering Death Question

Carrie B

A new client has hired me to maintain their city garden, the garden is landscaped primarily with bamboo and I have very little bamboo experience.

On our initial consultation, the client pointed out several dead and dying clumps of bamboo, asking me to clean those areas up. He told me that he left town last summer during a drought, and believed that to be the reason for the failing plants.

When I returned to do the work, and upon closer inspection, I realized that those dead and dying clumps were flowering. I know that bamboo generally (always?) dies when it flowers, and will inform the client of this.

So... if most of the bamboo in the garden looks fine, with several dead clumps, will the rest also flower and die soon? Should I dig out the dead clumps?

Anything else I should know/tell the client?

Many thanks.
