Help with Fargesia Bamboo? Sunset Glow

gardenbug

What should I feed my bamboo please?

I'm in Zone 8b, British Columbia.

Fargesia - Sunset Glow (clumping)

I rescued this one from the garden centre. It had a bit of winter die back. It is about 5' tall now. I divided it a couple of weeks ago, as the original plastic nursery pot had broken from the roots being so tightly root bound. I planted each one in large containers. Anyway, the new leaves emerging are green but the tips of them are brown. Should I fertilize? If so, with what and how much? Should the soil be moist at all times? Thank you for your help.

Bamboo like water, so I keep them moist, but not drowned. Brown tips on leaves can mean too much water, but some types of bamboo seem more prone to brown tips than others. If you're watering reasonably, new leaves are emerging, and you're not losing lots of leaves, the plant is not in any danger. Since it was so rootbound, you might want to give it some fertilizer. Any general purpose fertilizer should be fine, although I prefer to use a slow release fertilizer, like Osmocote.

kudzu9, Thank you for your help. I'm keeping the containers moist, they have excellent drainage. Thanks for letting me know what you use. Osmocote seems to be a very popular fertilizer used on various plants. I'll get some. Thanks again.

Out of curiosity...what do you think of using lawn fertilizer? I have read that since Bamboo is a grass it is okay to use.

Grass fertilizer should be fine on any established bamboo. It's just that you've got a plant that needs babying, so slow release is easiest. Otherwise, dilute quantities of grass fertilizer at regular intervals will work, too.

kudzu9 - Thank you for helping me with my bamboo. I will definitely be babying my bamboo. I'm going to get some Slow Release Osmocote. Is there a special kind you get? Should I keep my soil moist at all times? I have the bamboo placed where it gets mostly sun but also a bit of shade. I wonder also should I remove the leaves that have turned brown?

Here are some pics of my bamboo, just in case it might help.
Please forgive, my small backyard is still being renovated. lol
Thanks again for all your help.

I use the Outdoor and Indoor Osmocote (19-6-12).

You can remove some of the brown leaves, but don't go crazy. I can see there's still a lot of green growth on many of those damaged leaves, which may help the plant grow, and the bamboo will get rid of dying leaves on its own.

It looks like you have a couple of nice plants there and they should do well once they settle in. Do keep them moist. It looks to me like a lot of the damage on the leaves was from being rootbound and possible underwatering before you got the plants.

kudzu9, I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help with my bamboo. I'm happy you think it's got a chance. I'll be getting some Osmocote. Thank you.
