Unwanted Bamboo in my front lawn

Hello all and thanks for this wonderful forum. The former owner of my house planted what I'd characterize as a "dwarf" bamboo which he then proceeded to let grow out of control.

It now grows among the the tall fescue in my front lawn and shoots rhizomes into the bed bordering my house and into my neighbor's lawn.

Any way I can get rid of it short of killing the entire lawn, digging out the bamboo, and starting from scratch?

Mowing doesn't seem to address the issue because this bamboo is such a tiny variety I can see little blades it shoots out just below the ground.

Would a summer of mowing the lawn extremely short strangle it? That might just kill my lawn too...
