Hiya--- I planted 16 1 gallon P. Atrovaginata in late April. 2 of the 16 plants are producing 1 shoot each and that is all I am seeing so far. Bummer!

I am hoping these things will really take off in the coming weeks, but right now, I'm with you -- what's the deal??

My Atro was slow to take off. The first two years it sent up short shoots (Under 6 feet) but the second year I noticed that it was sending out some good rhizomes so I put a couple of inches of compost over the area the rhizomes were under and this year (third year) it is starting to send up some impressive shoots. It also did pretty well with the low temp of -6*F last winter.

I'm new to bamboo, but I assume that your colder zones will impact the start/length of the shooting season.
My P. Nigra, transplanted Feb. 17th, started shooting the first week of March and has continued to shoot -- I discovered a new culm just three days ago. I'd say wait it out, there should be more to come.
