Yellow Groove Bamboo - new shoots dying

Hello ... have been trying for years to establish a grove of bamboo and was having considerable success in a raised bed with some Yellow Groove Bamboo (I believe) that I planted 2 1/2 years ago. In its second spring the bamboo was throwing up 25 plus thick beautiful shoots. Went away for the weekend and looked and found several of the shoots (now 30 inches tall in some cases) were bent in half and then breaking. What's causing that? Pests? Disease? Do I need to Feed?

The soils pretty rich, the grove gets full sun, though many of the shoots are pretty shaded by a deck next door and the culms they're growing amongst. There are about 12 healthy culms, which are 12 - 15 feet ... 3 of those are new from last year.

Thanks for any advice.
