What goes well with bamboo?

Thinking of putting bamboo in my little garden, for decoration and screening. Would like to add another plant (evergreen if poss), that would compliment it. Was thinking of star jasmine, but would that be two extreme themes - japanese and county garden?? Any suggestions welcome, thanks!

Hydrangea...

Be careful of vines/ creepers. My over-the-fence neighbor has passion and jasmine and it takes a lot of work keeping it out of the top of my bamboo. At first I thought it was OK, until they died out in winter and I was left pulling hardened dead vine out of the top of my bamboo.

I hear the tips fry up well in butter, and bamboo hearts are popular with rice ...

Wait, that wasn't really your question?

Holly berry bushes should be good for low evergreen cover around the base, with the bamboo sticking up out of it or behind it ... but those leaves have such sharp little needles on them ... o.O
