transplanting bamboo - long drive

Hi all, My parents have a huge grove of 'yellow groove' bamboo (Phyllostachys aureosulcata) and I want to transplant as much as I can to my house in Easton, MA (Zone 6a). My parents live in Malvern, PA which is about 6.5 hrs. away. My Dad once tried to dig-up some plants and bring them up and I planted them but they never took off. The looked ok through the summer/fall, but slowly yellowed and hey didn't make it through the winter which made me think they died because it got too cold, but that variety is hardy to -15F, so it should be ok around me.

I have to assume my Dad didn't extract them properly. I'm going down to PA the end of July, and I'd like to formulate a plan to harvest some plants the best way. Thanks in advance for the advice!!
