You've picked the right bamboo, as it's cold hardy to about -20F. However, it does like partial shade. On a scale of 1-5, where 5 is full sun, the American Bamboo Society Species Tables list it as a "2."

Hey Toronto! My experience w/ F. m. supports what kudzu says. For mine (several), full sun seems to be okay as long as it's not all day long. We've had upper 80s/low 90s lately so I check and keep watered (not wet) and well mulched. Leaves curl during midday/hot sun but uncurl as soon as they're in shade. Mine are all located out in backyard east of house so they get some shade in the p.m. from house and/or other trees, etc. Getting new green culms now. I've had excellent results here w/ F. m.- well mulched for winter (6400 ft elev & -17F last winter). regards Dave
