Unusual new Buddha Belly Culm

My Dwarf Buddha Belly bamboo has produced a new culm which appears to be an offshoot - it's rings are much farther apart and don't bulge as much. I heard it sometimes happens and that I should just cut it off and that more culms will grow soon. Has anyone had this issue with their buddha belly or have any more insight as to why the difference in culms?

Pronounced nodes on Buddha Belly are said to be encouraged by stressing the plant (reduced watering). If that was my bamboo, I'd leave the new culm as it adds visual interest. Besides, cutting it off will not necessarily encourage new growth...bamboo growth habits are not like other plants.
