Clumping bamboo getting invasive

Hello,

we've had a clumping bamboo in our garden for several years without any problem. Now all of a sudden, since last year, it starts to have a lot of new stems coming out of the side of the plant. They are growing very fast, are very high and are getting invasive. It's like having a non-clumping bamboo. We bought the bamboo as a clumping one so we did not think to be having this problem at all. Can someone give some advice or comment on this? Thank you for your answers.

How far away from the original clump are the new culms emerging?

Do you know the variety of the bamboo. Some running bamboos such as golden or black are sold as clumping in cool climates but after 4 or 5 years will start to run.

I don't know the variety: it has small yellowish leaves, a little bit hanging on top of the stem.
They start next to the clump and eventually are at about two to three meters from the clump.

Yes: It's a running bamboo that didn't start to run on your site until recently.

I agree with bboy. Many runners will stay relatively close toether for several years and then all of a sudden appear all over the place. There are open clumpers but none that I know of that are open 3-4 meters between culms. I have bought bamboos before from people that I thought would know what they are talking about that end up being not what they said it was. Sounds like that is what happened to you.
