I think that you should make sure it gets enough water and sunlight and then leave it alone until the shoots have finished growing and leafed out. There's a good chance that some of the shoots will die. Dont even bother trying to create new plants from young shoots. They will just die. In the late summer put your plant in the ground. The culms are normally green and gradually become black over a period of a couple of years. If you are planning on growing it indoors be prepared to provide it with lots of artificial light and regular misting.

well I live in Minnesota so I don't really want to put it in the ground for the winter untill I know it is mature enough to handle it without dieing on me. And the main stock has turned compleatly brown, is there any chance for this comming back healthy? Thanks for the help

I don't think that there is much chance of black bamboo surviving outdoors in Minnesota. The above ground part of the plant can't survive below -5 and that may be too optimistic. A Minnesota winter would probably kill everyting above ground though the rhizomes and roots might survive, I just don't know. For now I would put the plant in the sun and keep it watered. From your description it sounds like it might be too late for this specimen. Does it have any green leaves?

You should do an internet search for "Phyllostachys nigra" and try and find some information that will help you.

Phyllostachys nuda is a nice bamboo and very cold hardy. You might want to grow that outdoors.

yeah, it has some larger green leaves at the bottem and about 6 new clums comming up.
