You might be able to get small bamboos to grow in the wide parts, the skinny sections may be too small for good results with bamboos of much size.

All kinds tried will be liable to grow much smaller in these confined spaces than they would in the ground. See table of bamboos in Sunset WESTERN GARDEN BOOK (2007, Sunset Publishing, Menlo Park) for representative size comparisons between different kinds in containers and in the ground.

If it were mine I would use markedly different kinds of plants in each section of the design, rather than all one kind or type.

In a suitable climate my top priority bamboo would be Chusquea coronalis. If you are in coastal California (90F is not very hot for southern California, even coastal northern California gets well above 100F beyond the immediate outer coast) this one may be possible in your location.
