Slow start...then, they took off!!

I planted a row of Fargesia rufa and Borinda angustissia a few years ago. They seemed to grow very slowly and I remember how expensive these little plants were so I only bought a few (maybe four plants). Each year, I would divide the tiny clumps with a shovel to increase the length of the hedge. Well, this year they just took off! Probably helped that last year saw an excess of some 80 inches of precip.. So, now they form a continuous hedge some 4-5 feet in height.--Much faster than I ever thought, but they do take a few years to take off. So there is definitely a way to install a clumping bamboo hedge in a way that is economical. It just takes about 3-4 years and a lot of rain.

I planted a Fargesia Denuda in shade and I am waiting
for it to take off also. It was just planted last year though, so I guess I will have to wait a couple more years.
I planted it for privacy, but I also have erosion problems and bamboo I am sure is very good for erosion.

I will post a pic tomorrow. The hedge is located on the east side of the property, under a large Pin oak. Neighbors recently up a 6 foot fence on the the eastern border, so it is shaded more now. But Fargesias appreciate the shade in hot summer areas. I have not watered them in the current season of heat and drought and they still look great. They really went from nothing special to huge in one year!

It's fairly typical for bamboo to not do a lot aboveground for the first couple of years after they've been planted. They first establish a sound root system, then they put their energy into culms and leaves. Sounds like you've been doing the right stuff as far as maintaining them.
