It depends on many things, including how well the joints are made, and the type of joint (rattan wrapped, nailed joint, bamboo pegged joint, glued joint, etc.). The basic bamboo material should last quite a few years, but you will have to accept that weathering will turn it gray over time, so, even if it holds together well, it won't be as pretty as when you bought it if it's out in the rain. The main determination you will have to make is weather the joints will hold up. I made a bamboo structure -- a dividing screen -- about 4 years ago that still looks great...but it is under the edge of a carport and sheltered from direct rain.

Yeah, I'm going to have to really inspect those joints. I certainly don't need a heavy bamboo roof falling on my family!

I'm thinking it might be a good idea to reinforce it with some cedar or redwood posts too. It'd be good for peace of mind as well as strength.

Anyone out there with real experience with these though?
