I would like to plant Vivax, Heungwhenzhu a timber bamboo in a 12 ' x 6 ft bed with the proper rhizome barrier all the way around. I decided on the Vivax because it is tall and has thick culms. Do you think I made the right choice? Should I consider other alternatives given my needs and the size of the bed? Any ideas? It is a very sunny spot. I live in Abbotsford, BC in Zone 8. I would like the bamboo to be tall and have thick culms and also to be stable and not drop in the wind or rain. I want it for privacy and for looks.

Also, will the size of the bed restrict the tallness of my bamboo and it's culms. If so by how much? Thanks

Vivax may not be the best choice for you. While vivax has large culms, it is also very thin-walled and brittle, and the culms break in half under snow loading. Something like Ph. nigra 'Henon' would be a better choice: it gets large, too, and has very strong and flexible culms.
