will encroaching bamboo kill a young tree?

There is a young cork elm in my garden that is being snuck up on by p. nigra...I notice grass nor anything grows under the bamboo...does it produce something like juglan that will kill or suppress other plants? I don't want to loose the pretty little tree, but I love the bamboo, too.

I'm pretty sure the bamboo doesn't produce anything like that, but it will shade the area and provide a lot of competition for water and nutrients.

Bamboo is totally benign as far as production of chemicals, etc. I don't know why there isn't other stuff growing around your bamboo...I have grasses, flowers, and weeds come up regularly around mine. Your problem is not that the bamboo will exude bad voodoo, but that it will send up culms around the tree. This won't hurt the tree, but it probably isn't the look you want. I'd advise you get a pickaxe and chop the errant rhizomes back, and then, maybe, install some bamboo barrier between the two to prevent the bamboo from re-invading.
