 o
When/how to divide Phyllostachys aurea

I have it in a barrier in the ground, but it keeps running over this in a way that drives me crazy. I have a Fargesia robusta to take its place, and want to keep it in a pot instead. It will be much larger than the pot I'll be putting it in, so I'll need to...trim/divide? When I did this to a P. bisetti this spring, I nearly killed it. Or did kill it, not sure yet.

Please guide me as to how to do this without another bamboo death on my conscience. I thought it would be like a grass; whack and divide. Oops.

I was told to do this in the fall/winter. I have some Golden in a large container that I will divide in the fall.

When it's pretty dormant...late fall through early spring. Don't try to divide a bamboo during the growing season.
