Hi Scott,

It appears your Ph rubro has been doing better in the shade than mine has in the sun. I dug two plants six years ago at the Hillery's place in Jarrell TX just before it was sold. One was from the area where the rubro was growing and it is now about 10 ft tall max and only started to run last year. The other rubro was off on its own in a different area in a very tight clump and marked "UNK." That one is one of the most prolific culm produces I have ever seen. It has run all over the place from the beginning but is only a few feet tall. I beleve it is also a rubro because the new shoots have the distinctive red-margin, the same as the first one I dug.

Are you getting rid of all of it or just enough to bring it back under control?

Kt- I'm about 25min west of Brenham on Hwy 36. Welcome to visit if you're in the neighborhood.

Mike- The grove I found my rhizomes from was growing in a shaded creek/ditch area. It was thriving there and most of the stand was around 25-30'. I hesistated after seeing this but wanted to try it for a while at the house- almost scary when you see the spring shoots coming up 15-20' away from the original plant. I've got two other runners in the same area though and just don't want this one to over take them- it's more aggresive so i'll be removing all of it. I left this one to fend for itself over this hot dry summer and it suffered and most of the leaves turned dry brown but as soon as we had a rain it snapped back with new healthy green leaves. This one seems to like the protection of shade here in central TX, hot or dry.
