I am curious to see how many bamboos and what species and cultivars people have.I know this is a tedious task for some of you who have a gazillion bamboos but it would be appreciated.It doesn't matter if you have only 1 or 100+ please feel free to post what you are growing and what zone you are in. I'm in Zone 9, hot summers and winters where it dips to about freezing 3-15 times per season, (but usually not much less).

I've got three Bambusa's

ventricosa - been in the ground 4 years and just coming into "it's own"

multiplex "Alphonse Karr" - 2 years in the ground. It had five culms when first planted and now has upwards of 20, with at least 5 new ones in progress.

oldhamii - planted last March. This one leafed-out very well this summer and put up one 1" x 15' culm, (can't wait till next year!).

I also have one running pygmy noid that I've afraid to plant, (but maybe not now that I've seen the recent thread concerning pygmy ground-covers...)

I was thrilled to find someone right here in town that was willing to get me started and have to say I will be making many trips back to visit "Dr. Bamboo" in the future.

His son has Bamboo Texas in Houston and they do seem to have a great assortment to select from.

As long as it recovers from being totally submerged in a bucket of soapy water over night; blasted on the roots with a strong hose spray to bare root it; survived the 1 hour trip to plant inspection in Honolulu mid-day weather, and then survives the next 15 hours scrunched up bare-root in a bag on an airplane; you'll have one more to add to your list!

You can pick em up this weekend if you like, it will be bare root until you get it.

Konifer I know of 3 people off the top of my head who have at least 100 more species than I do! I'd probably go nuts on the maples too but they are deer food here.

Kudzu I'm always willing to consider readjustments/modifications to my BMI with trades but there aren't many left for me to try in-ground and I'm done with container plants....probably...

I lost the following soon after getting them and I'd like to reacquire: Sasa Ohdana, Sasa Kagamiana, Sasa Veitchii Tyugokensis, maybe the Draco White Dragon, maybe the Black Stem Vivax. I'm also looking for Phy. Kwangsiensis, Sasa/Sasaella Sasakiana and would consider trades for some of the Phy. Bambusoides cultivars - Allgold, Marliac, Tanakae.

CJ, the first few I got in 2002 - and nice they were too - were neglected (planted them, went away, left instructions but you know how good some people are at following such)anyway those first ones perished. Much luckier and more careful with my next set in 2003 which are doing well. I'm hooked now.

I thought I had more species/varieties than this, but inventorying them reveals that I'm actually coming up short! I had 35 types at one point, and a number of 'boos that have come and gone through selling, etc. But I definitely don't have 50 kinds of 'boo on my property at this writing. Guess I'll go scouting for new stuff to make up the difference. heh heh

I promised myself, to stop counting at 100, promised the wife to stop at 200, and now have no idea, apart from it's above 250-!

On another note, I've had amazing problems with the naming of bamboos, mainly green phyllostachys, the UK bamboo stock is completely messed up , the ammount of times I've bought new stock only to find out a few years later that it's somthing it is'nt. Is there the same problem you're way.
The only UK supplier's to trust David Cramptom, Mike Bell, and from Belgium, Jos v.palen.

Makj, I think there are mix-ups here too but I bet if I had as many bamboo as you I'd probably notice it even more. So far I've gotten suspicious ID's on several green Phyllostachys. I do think that most of our Phyllostachys were introduced into the US by McClure and so were initially correctly identified & named. I imagine a few mix-ups have occured since. ;)

Thuja, I think I managed to destroy the A. gigantea by planting it in a spot that got too little light and water and too much wind. It barely survived the first winter, and the fragile shoots that showed up the following spring withered within weeks of coming up. I haven't been able to get a replacement since. I saw a stand of "tecta" along the Chattahoochee River in Georgia, last summer, and was tempted to dig some up, but didn't have time.

Most og my collection have been set in the ground now for about 3 years. This year and next I'm prepared for the most growth.

Phylostachys Aureosulcata Spectabilis (2 years)
Has lost all leaves both years, but only the smallest culms died. Tallest culm is 14'. Most are 6' to 8'.

SemiArundinaria Fastuosa (one year)
All culms died to the ground last year but fellow Rhode Islander tells me this gets better over time. Tallest culm is 12'. Most are 6'.

Fargesia Rufa (one year)
This is the star in terms of looking good year-round. It is now about 5' tall.

Generally the AK looks better than the Vittata but right now the Vittata looks great and has a 6' shoot growing. I think pots are hard.

Phyllostachys Rubromarginata (2 years)
Planted in the shade, this has never performed the way I expected. It dies to the ground each year and comes back very small. Because it behaves so much worse than expected, I wonder if it was not mis-identified.

These have been in the ground two years. The first year, everything died to the ground, Last year it mostly died to the ground. I think these will slowly size up and survive better in the winter.

I am amazed at the number of boo's that some of you have managed to plant in small area's. That is true dedication. The fact that I am here when the BOO KING came in to being makes me proud!

My number of "2" look plum pitiful compare to the list going on here!!!
But.....I am willing and open to expanding my list. Have lots of room for planting just need bamboo.

I want to be careful where I order bamboo from since I am so new and don't know what the heck I'm doing yet. (learning high on my list, experience to come)

I read the thread on ebay sellers and that was a big help.

Then I decided to risk the neighbors wrath and try a runner. Being in zone 5 it should be fairly safe. I got a Phyllostachys Bissetii. This gave me three new shoots in it’s second year, all well behaved and close to "Mom". The tallest is almost five feet. I can’t wait to see what this year will bring!

Last year I got a Sasa Senanensis , a Phyllostachys Decora and a Pleioblastus Chino Murakamianus. It has been so cold this spring that I only recently took off the winter mulch so can’t be sure yet if they survived the winter. Cross your fingers for me!

Off the subject, but gotta say....so glad I found this site. When I’m not out staring at my bamboo I’m reading until my eyes cross!

How do ya'll keep your bamboos from taking over the world? That's part of the reason I stay away from them, I've seen yards here that were solid bamboo, doesn't seem to matter what variety, they like the climate and take off! Plus I don't need ANOTHER plant addiction! Got started on palms this year and now there are 5 waiting to be planted.

Sounds like Bambusa multiplex 'Al Karr' a common yellow bamboo with green stripes. In your area it could also be Bambusa vulgaris 'Vittata' or PAINTED BAMBOO which gets much large than Al Karr.

There are a few others that fit that description but Guadua angustifolia bicolor has 'thorns' on it which is a giveaway, so I don't think it is Bi-colour. When young, the culms tend to be more green with yellow stripes instead of the opposite.

How large it the 'mother' clump? What size culms, thickness and height??

Al Karr gets about 18 to 20 feet here west of Houston, but for you it might reach 25 feet. Is that too tall?

It will have thorns if it is bi-color, even when it is small, and bi-color is quite rare here. I have some in a pot but know of no one else in Texas that grows it.

I'm still leaning toward Al Karr.

We are located about 75 miles west of Houston,

We can't make it to the Ft. Bend trade this weekend due to prior engagements, but would like to go. How about you, will you be going?

I have been to Maas Nursery in Seabrook, on many occasions, they have a pretty good selection of bamboo there.

Keep me posted on your bamboo, as I am interested to see which one it will turn out to be, yet I still believe it is Al Karr, but you never know.

You should be able to grow even more clumpers in your area than I can here. Runners might do too well for you, and you might have to spend a lot of time keeping them contained.

Look into the Bambusas, there are many to choose from to add to your collection. B. chungii has blue-ish culms, very beautiful. B. oldhamii gets very tall and grows very erect, with no leaning outward and the culms can get over four inches thick. There are some with green culms, yellow culms, green with white stripes, green with yellow stripes, yellow with green stripes, etc.

I bought some P. nigra there many years ago. They have many other plants also. Their catalog has no photos, but is packed with different kinds of plants.

There are many clumpers that will do very well in your area, but most are much larger than the Bambusas and might take up too much space.

Look under Dendrocalamus, Gigantochloa, Guadua, and Thyrostachys for some nice bamboos. I have some of each here but they don't do very well because it gets too cold in the Winter.
