| Hello fellow bamboo people,
I am curious to see how many bamboos and what species and cultivars people have.I know this is a tedious task for some of you who have a gazillion bamboos but it would be appreciated. It doesn't matter if you have only 1 or 100+ please feel free to post what you are growing and what zone you are in. Thank you. Koniferkid |

| I have 10..... Phyllostachys: aureosulcata "Yellow Groove" - small vivax 'aureocaulis' - 3 ft tall vivax 'aureocaulis' - not sure what is going on with this one... shoots start out lime green and end up looking like a yellow from sun exposure. 8ft tall. still keeping green stripes. not counting this separate just yet Phyllostachys bissetti - 3ft traded w/ other GWer this year for some of my unstable vivax a. Pleioblastus: viridistriatus "dwarf green stripe" - e-bay this year fortunei "dwarf white stripe" - this year from Fred - (he's the man!) distichus "dwarf fern leaf" - got from e-bay boo seller (this year) that ships bare root. 1st order was fried, he did send a new order and is just now looking ok Fargesia: dracocephala 'White Dragon' - got from good e-bay seller this year - thanks Phil robusta - new this year, traded a book to da feller who started this thread for this one, and ended up with the next two types below as a bonus. Indocalamus tessalatus - it's growing in full sun until other boos get bigger. water often. smaller lighter shaded leaves but doing ok. Semiarundinaria fastuosa - small rhizome piece with 6" culms. potted and alive want list: think that's it, but every time I think I'm done 1 or more grab my attention. |

| Koniferkid, I'm in Zone 9, hot summers and winters where it dips to about freezing 3-15 times per season, (but usually not much less). I've got three Bambusa's ventricosa - been in the ground 4 years and just coming into "it's own" multiplex "Alphonse Karr" - 2 years in the ground. It had five culms when first planted and now has upwards of 20, with at least 5 new ones in progress. oldhamii - planted last March. This one leafed-out very well this summer and put up one 1" x 15' culm, (can't wait till next year!). I also have one running pygmy noid that I've afraid to plant, (but maybe not now that I've seen the recent thread concerning pygmy ground-covers...) Mike |
|
| Wow, nice lists there! The only genus lists I have longer are: Pleioblastus: and Sasa: I'm sure someone can top that. Anyway, as for total species, I better wait until spring to answer that question; the number might decrease dramatically. I really would like to get an A. g. 'Macon' too, but I did get a real nice 'Hoosier Strain' from Brad that may be just as hardy. :) |

| Sorry to go off-point, but Countrynest I'm so jealous of your Ph nigra. I bought mine in Spring 2004 as a smallish plant (about 2ft/60cm tall and several culms) but had it in a big pot, and it was so sad. I've only just moved into the ground this summer in semi-shade and it has a few new shoots now. But when or when will it get to 15 ft :( |
|
| Since total does not matter, as of last night I am the proud owner of 1 Oldhamii. Brought her home and now am looking for the best place to plant. I was thrilled to find someone right here in town that was willing to get me started and have to say I will be making many trips back to visit "Dr. Bamboo" in the future. |
|
| pandamania- It's not unusual for a bamboo to need a couple of years before it takes off. Be patient...it's like children...they grow up before you know it! |
|
| foxD - I think that you can add one more to your total, as I just cleared quarrantine with one of the variegated pygmaeus/distichus that has your name on it. As long as it recovers from being totally submerged in a bucket of soapy water over night; blasted on the roots with a strong hose spray to bare root it; survived the 1 hour trip to plant inspection in Honolulu mid-day weather, and then survives the next 15 hours scrunched up bare-root in a bag on an airplane; you'll have one more to add to your list! You can pick em up this weekend if you like, it will be bare root until you get it. Brad |
|
| YAY!!! I'm going to be gone most of the day saturday. How early are you up sunday? |

| People i wanted to thank for mine. Fred, he got me started with most of mine when i was a complete newbie, Mike for the bisetii, Brad who has been generous with a few goodies and Kudzu for the Moso(still kickin'n lookin' better). thanks you guys...since coming to this forum i feel i have a few more nice friends. It has such more of a personal feel growing something you got from someone vs a nursery or Ebay. Kurt |

| Hoosier: I got as many japanese maples as you do boo. That's scary....I only got a 1/6 of an acre to play around with here.I think you should change your name to the Bamboo King. I wonder what the Guinness record is for bamboos? It might be you .LOL.... Thanks- Koniferkid |
|
| hoosier52- Obviously your BMI (Bamboo Mass Index) is dangerously high. If I can help you bring those numbers down, you have only to ask... |
|
| Kentuck - 2 more I remembered as not on the list Sinobambusa Tootsik, Chimonobambusa Tumidissinoda, plus the Bambusas and the Gigantochloa are all pot plants, everything else is in-ground, somewhere around 140 species in-ground. Konifer I know of 3 people off the top of my head who have at least 100 more species than I do! I'd probably go nuts on the maples too but they are deer food here. Kudzu I'm always willing to consider readjustments/modifications to my BMI with trades but there aren't many left for me to try in-ground and I'm done with container plants....probably... I lost the following soon after getting them and I'd like to reacquire: Sasa Ohdana, Sasa Kagamiana, Sasa Veitchii Tyugokensis, maybe the Draco White Dragon, maybe the Black Stem Vivax. I'm also looking for Phy. Kwangsiensis, Sasa/Sasaella Sasakiana and would consider trades for some of the Phy. Bambusoides cultivars - Allgold, Marliac, Tanakae. |

| Kudzu, yes I know patience is a virtue. I am very happy about how well settled the black bamboo is in the ground though, so hopefully that means it florishes from here on. I'm really impressed with these lists too, wish I had the space to collect and grow as many as some of you. CJ, the first few I got in 2002 - and nice they were too - were neglected (planted them, went away, left instructions but you know how good some people are at following such)anyway those first ones perished. Much luckier and more careful with my next set in 2003 which are doing well. I'm hooked now. |

| Hoosier, what's the story behind 'Metal Forge' Rivercane? I like the name. I have a Rivercane from Jennaray in Oklahoma that I am calling 'Inola' for lack of a better name. So far it has been slow to establish. No surprise there I guess. CJ, there is photo album already where many of these plants can be seen at Bambooweb.info Fred, quite a nice list there. | Thuja, my friend Adam Turtle collects and does research on A Gigantea. While discussing it one day, I told him that although it is the superior hardy bamboo it is so very slow to establish. He agreed but said there is an exception, then drove me to one of his groves and had me dig a piece of a 'clone' he said was very fast to establish and he called it Metal Forge, I believe because of a place name from where it came. So far, it has produced no shoots and no visible rhizome, although I have only had it since March...we'll see... |

I had 35 types at one point, and a number of 'boos that have come and gone through selling, etc. But I definitely don't have 50 kinds of 'boo on my property at this writing. Guess I'll go scouting for new stuff to make up the difference. heh heh |
|
| Hey aaaaaaa1, is that Guadua you have the striped variety? If so, it is on my wish list...just havn't aquired it yet along with the other 9 species that I desire. |
|
| aaaaaaa1- I'd love to try Guadua. I'm just waiting for global warming to improve my growing climate... |
|
| Here's a fairly old list ( the only one that would copy and paste) , once again the Uk climate is favorable to growing large numbers of bamboo, none will reach anything like the size possible in the USA or need the ammount of control. The semi-tropical stuff dose grow here but only just and is whey smaller than when grown in the right climate. I promised myself, to stop counting at 100, promised the wife to stop at 200, and now have no idea, apart from it's above 250-! On another note, I've had amazing problems with the naming of bamboos, mainly green phyllostachys, the UK bamboo stock is completely messed up , the ammount of times I've bought new stock only to find out a few years later that it's somthing it is'nt. Is there the same problem you're way. Cheer's AMPLEOCALMUS p. gauntletti p. shibuyanus 'tsuboi' |

| Makj: WOW! You made alot of us jealous here on the other side of the pond.Cheers and thanks. If you want to post any pictures in the gallery it would be really nice. Koniferkid |
|
| Nice collections there! Cady, what happened with your A. gigantea? I thought that it was supposed to be so ultra hardy. I had high hopes for it here, but maybe too much hope. I know it's slow to establish, so maybe that's part of what happened. Also I guess the species varies a lot in hardiness. Makj, I think there are mix-ups here too but I bet if I had as many bamboo as you I'd probably notice it even more. So far I've gotten suspicious ID's on several green Phyllostachys. I do think that most of our Phyllostachys were introduced into the US by McClure and so were initially correctly identified & named. I imagine a few mix-ups have occured since. ;) |
|
| Oops. I forgot -- I have Fargesia murielae too. It's tucked in a corner and is only 3' tall at this time, so it slipped my mind. Thuja, I think I managed to destroy the A. gigantea by planting it in a spot that got too little light and water and too much wind. It barely survived the first winter, and the fragile shoots that showed up the following spring withered within weeks of coming up. I haven't been able to get a replacement since. I saw a stand of "tecta" along the Chattahoochee River in Georgia, last summer, and was tempted to dig some up, but didn't have time. |

| Hey aaaaaaa1, GUADUA AUGUSTIFOLIA is a tropical 'boo. So do you have it in a pot to be brought inside on frost nights or What. I also am in zone 9 between Ocala and Leesburg. countrynest |

| makj, Your list makes me wish I lived in a milder climate! Ah well. I just was poking around the garden and came across two Shibatea kumasaca tucked away in the bushes. So, at least I can add that to my above list. And I just remembered that I managed to lose two Hibanobambusa tranquillens "Shiroshima" a couple years ago, so add that to my "Bamboos I've Killed" list! |
|
| Bambusa : OldHamii Dendrocalamus Minor Amoenus Phyllostachys Aureosulcata 'Spectabilis' Most og my collection have been set in the ground now for about 3 years. This year and next I'm prepared for the most growth. Joshua |
|
| OK. I'll confess, although after reading this stuff, I may need to change my sig to BambooDeprivedBob. I'm on the warm side of zone 6 in Rhode Island. Phylostachys Aureosulcata Spectabilis (2 years) SemiArundinaria Fastuosa (one year) Fargesia Rufa (one year) Bambusa Multiplex (Alphonse Karr) in pot Generally the AK looks better than the Vittata but right now the Vittata looks great and has a 6' shoot growing. I think pots are hard. Phyllostachys Rubromarginata (2 years) Pseudosasa Japonica These have been in the ground two years. The first year, everything died to the ground, Last year it mostly died to the ground. I think these will slowly size up and survive better in the winter. |
|
| Please consider me as part of CJ's offer to take any strays. LOL I am amazed at the number of boo's that some of you have managed to plant in small area's. That is true dedication. The fact that I am here when the BOO KING came in to being makes me proud! My number of "2" look plum pitiful compare to the list going on here!!! I want to be careful where I order bamboo from since I am so new and don't know what the heck I'm doing yet. (learning high on my list, experience to come) I read the thread on ebay sellers and that was a big help. |

| OK, I'm a little late, but it's taken me some time to get back into the swing of things since Katrina and Rita. Wanted to get my little list in also, though. Phyllostachys 'Castillon' Am working on adding Dendrocalamus minor 'Amoenus' and would like to find some B. vulgaris 'Vittata' also. (Of course, there are others . . . but these two are goals for the near term!) Bamboo is an amazing addiction, isn't it?!?! Dave |

| All is well here. We're north of Lake Pontchartrain and suffered very minimal material damage. The woods around us have LOTS of trees down. Flood through the backyard actually saved the plants . . . watered them when they were stored in the shed! Real "damage" was me having responsibility to the company (HQ in the NO suburbs) and chasing all over south Louisiana running away from hurricanes for seven weeks! Laura was a trooper taking care of "my" plants for me! Thanks for the nice thoughts/words! Dave |

| So good to know you're okay! Thanks for letting us know. |

| I've gathered quite a collection in less than a year. But I have to get my irrigation in before I can plant these. All are in 15 gallon to 31 inch box size. So my Moso is about 6 years old and I have 30 plus new shoots this year over 1.5 inches. It needs the ground. Maybe more? Qty. 26!! Ph. decora (mannii) Probably dulcis and green onion added this week. |

| i'm only growing 1 type of bamboo at present,i have got a 7-8 year old grove of (yellow groove )bamboo, and have been taking divisions and planting them the last couple days. here is a link to pics of my grove: |
Here is a link that might be useful: yellow groove

| Being relatively new to bamboo (three years) and somewhat confined as to space, I only have six so far. A Fargesia Murielae and Fargesia Nitida are my two oldest. They haven’t done much yet, but I am hoping to see them take off this year. Then I decided to risk the neighbors wrath and try a runner. Being in zone 5 it should be fairly safe. I got a Phyllostachys Bissetii. This gave me three new shoots in it’s second year, all well behaved and close to "Mom". The tallest is almost five feet. I can’t wait to see what this year will bring! Last year I got a Sasa Senanensis , a Phyllostachys Decora and a Pleioblastus Chino Murakamianus. It has been so cold this spring that I only recently took off the winter mulch so can’t be sure yet if they survived the winter. Cross your fingers for me! Off the subject, but gotta say....so glad I found this site. When I’m not out staring at my bamboo I’m reading until my eyes cross! |

| Got here trying to figure out what bamboo I got in a trade. I only have the one. I have enough addictions! It's a lovely variegated, nice striped stalks. I'll identify it one of these days. Hope to get it planted this weekend. Assured it will not take off running, a big problem in our climate, and will form a good sized clump. Tally HO! |

| I don't have any way to post pictures. It's yellowish with green stripes. Maybe guadua angustifolia bicolor? Just a guess from the pics posted. I'll know more once it gets to growing well. How do ya'll keep your bamboos from taking over the world? That's part of the reason I stay away from them, I've seen yards here that were solid bamboo, doesn't seem to matter what variety, they like the climate and take off! Plus I don't need ANOTHER plant addiction! Got started on palms this year and now there are 5 waiting to be planted. |

| Beachplant, it is most likely a clumper and won't need a barrier, so don't worry, it won't take over your yard. Sounds like Bambusa multiplex 'Al Karr' a common yellow bamboo with green stripes. In your area it could also be Bambusa vulgaris 'Vittata' or PAINTED BAMBOO which gets much large than Al Karr. There are a few others that fit that description but Guadua angustifolia bicolor has 'thorns' on it which is a giveaway, so I don't think it is Bi-colour. When young, the culms tend to be more green with yellow stripes instead of the opposite. How large it the 'mother' clump? What size culms, thickness and height?? CJ, where have you been?? Good to see you're still around. How are your boos doing?? Kt |

Asper and Lako I receiced way back never made the trip... hoped they would show some signs of life but after nearly a year... nothing. I think boonut sent them. I forget. | I've not seen the clump mine came from. Right now I have a 5 gallon pot with about 8 stalks, they appear to have been cut off and have some foliage, about 4' tall. Didn't see any thorns. I was a bit worried cause the bi-color seemed a might larger than I want in the yard. There are some new sprouts coming up. How much sun? Tally HO! |
|
- Posted by kentuck_8b z8b TX (My Page) on Thu, Nov 1, 07 at 20:55
| Full sun to part shade would be best if planted in the ground, but being in a pot, you could give it less sun, which would help keep the soil from drying out too fast when you are away for a while. Al Karr gets about 18 to 20 feet here west of Houston, but for you it might reach 25 feet. Is that too tall? It will have thorns if it is bi-color, even when it is small, and bi-color is quite rare here. I have some in a pot but know of no one else in Texas that grows it. I'm still leaning toward Al Karr. | I can live with 25'. I'll stick it over in the back corner. AM sun. If possible I stick everything in the ground! Might as well, as you know, here in Texas in a pot just means the roots grow through the bottom & the plant is forever stuck in the pot! Where are you at anyway KT? I'm on the island. Are you going to the Ft. Bend trade this weekend? Tally HO! |

| Just remember, as I mentioned, it could also still be Bambusa vulgaris 'Vittata' PAINTED BAMBOO, among two others that I grow here. These are B. eutuldoides 'Viridivittata' and B. pervariabilis 'Viridistriatus' both getting about the same in height here, around 25 feet, but are a bit less cold hardy than Al Karr. We are located about 75 miles west of Houston, We can't make it to the Ft. Bend trade this weekend due to prior engagements, but would like to go. How about you, will you be going? I have been to Maas Nursery in Seabrook, on many occasions, they have a pretty good selection of bamboo there. Keep me posted on your bamboo, as I am interested to see which one it will turn out to be, yet I still believe it is Al Karr, but you never know. Kt |

| I love Maas! Though sometimes their prices are a bit much. I'm going to be at the Ft. Bend trade, this is the first time I've gone to it. I go to Galveston County and to Mercer. This is my first venture into bamboos, I have too many other addictions! Now I have to find room for all these bamboos I want now! Tally HO! |

| Yes, I have many plant addictions also, but bamboo is by far the biggest addiction. You should be able to grow even more clumpers in your area than I can here. Runners might do too well for you, and you might have to spend a lot of time keeping them contained. Look into the Bambusas, there are many to choose from to add to your collection. B. chungii has blue-ish culms, very beautiful. B. oldhamii gets very tall and grows very erect, with no leaning outward and the culms can get over four inches thick. There are some with green culms, yellow culms, green with white stripes, green with yellow stripes, yellow with green stripes, etc. Kt |

| Thanks KT, as if my other plant addictions aren't bad enough ya'll have me wanting bamboos now! I just went to my favorite nursery & got some new bromeliads I didn't have (or need for that matter!). I just have to road trip to Maas don't I? Then of course off to Lousiana for the nurseries there.... I need a bigger yard! No runners for me, you can NOT contain them down here. One of my plant traders put one in his yard, it's now in the neighbors, the drainage pond..... Tally HO! |

| There's a Nursery in Opelousas(sp?) Louisiana, I think it's called Louisiana Nursery, and they have a whole lot of bamboo, but you may need to make an appointment to visit there. I believe they have a website. I bought some P. nigra there many years ago. They have many other plants also. Their catalog has no photos, but is packed with different kinds of plants. There are many clumpers that will do very well in your area, but most are much larger than the Bambusas and might take up too much space. Click here for ABS species list Look under Dendrocalamus, Gigantochloa, Guadua, and Thyrostachys for some nice bamboos. I have some of each here but they don't do very well because it gets too cold in the Winter. Good Luck Kt |

| Only have 4 and five more on the way--and I just started a month ago. Addiction for sure, but maybe with more I won't be constantly peering at them. You think? Nah, just more to watch. |
