Should I thin the bamboo?

I have a moso grove (with some black bamboo interspersed) that is quite large--about an acre--in Oklahoma. In the center of the grove there are a number of shoots that have a diameter of maybe 3-4 inches. The other parts of the grove have a large number of shoots, but nothing like the larger diameter shoots. I've only been in this house for 3 years now, and haven't quite figured out how to encourage the bamboo to develop the larger shoots.

Do I need to fertilize the bamboo this winter?

Do I need to thin out the grove?

Should I water the grove this winter to encourage development of larger culms?

What kind of fertilizer (typical grass fertilizer?) to encourage large culm development but not make them rot?

Thanks in advance to anyone who knows the answers to these questions.
