dividing bamboo

I have a 5 gallon container of alphonse karr that has completely filled the pot. Can I divide it now or should I wait till spring? We have at least another month of warm weather. also what is the best way to go about it? CanI use a sawzall and cut it into quarters? I appreciate any advice, thanks

A sawzall would work fine and now would be a good time to divide the plant.

thanks bambookid524, the deed is done,but I have to say that was really hard. I'm sure the divided plants will do well but it is a lot different than dividing running bamboo. instead of rizomes it was more like cutting through it's heart, but the plants are still tall and healthy. I'll keep them potted in the shade for a few days
