what's the best bamboo for this situation?

if any!

there are two tree wells on the street in front of our house. I suggested planting drought tolerant trees to the HOA but one person wants bamboo. The site is:

1. In San Francisco, but the hotter, dryer end (90 degrees today, never foggy)

2. Gets about 4 hours of direct sun per day (N side of building)

3. Dry - any water the bamboo gets will be rain in winter, unless we water it additionally, which we'd rather not do except to establish it.

What species, if any, would manage under those conditions?

I think bambusa ventricosa kimmei sounds like a good choice since it should establish fairly quickly and I think this species prefers less sun since mine leaf curled when I put it out in full sun. I got mine from a guy in Texas on a different forum who probably has more.

I think you might be able to get the buddha bellies to form on it if your area doesn't get that much moisture and in zone 9, it should be able to thrive without any protection.
