Advice: Type of Bamboo with few leaves, no canopy

I was hoping that I could get some advice on what type of bamboo would be best. I have a small patio in SF (not sure what zone this would be) that has a large wall (~15' high) that I would like to mask with bamboo. Since it is a small patio and already doesn't get much sunlight, I would like to have as little canopy as possible. Additionally, I do not want it "bushy" to encroach on my small patio. Any advice? Is there also a way that it should be maintained to achieve the desired effect? Thanks for any input!

It doesn't sound like bamboo is a good choice for you. Masking a wall with bamboo, and as little canopy as possible are fairly contradictory requirements, and anything that masks a 15' high wall is going to block a lot of your light. How about a flat trellis on the wall with a vine? There's a number of good vines which would totally cover your wall, with nice flowers to boot. Check out the vines and passiflora forums here, and go to the next monthly plant sale at Strybing Arboretum for some interesting and unusual choices.
