HELP! Bamboo issues at our first house!!!

Posted by gdawg9 NY (My Page) on

Hope you can help! My wife and I just purchased our first house and there is a bamboo culm in our new yard. When we moved in August the bamboo shoots were green and straight up. Now they are yellowing and falling over, from the center outward.

A week ago I cut a few stalks that were falling over, almost on the ground. Now this is happening ... not sure if I did something wrong? We really love the bamboo, as it's beautiful and affords privacy in our yard.

I wish I could offer more, but I don't know what kind it is ... other than it tall, about 8 - 9 feet high. WOuld pictures help?

It might not be bamboo. It could be a giant reed or other plant that looks like bamboo, but isn't, and is seasonal, like Arundo donax. As kentuck says above: Post a picture.

Here are three pictures. If you want more, or these are insufficient, please let me know.

If you can believe it, I actually think a few stalks are trying to get into my garage. I found a couple under the door this morning. Maybe it's not a species that can survive the climate? We live in Westchester County, NY.

Sorry, but that's NOT bamboo. Not sure what kind of grass it is, but it does do well in your area.

As I suspected, it's some kind of reed grass, and it will dieback each fall.

It is a grass, did you mention it may be dyeing in the middle or not doing well? If so I just saw a great solution on the T.V. show Victory Garden. Take a reciprocating saw ( that's right) step into the center/area which is dying. Insert the blade into the dirt and cut along the perimeter of the area effected. Then cut an "X" in the center. remove the damaged part with a shovel/ spade. Replace the hole with soil and compost. The grass will return and this will save you the effort of digging up and dividing the grass, SOMETHING I've done TOO MANY TIMES
Good Luck and enjoy it looks like a magnificant plant

Thanks! It is indeed grass. I happened to have a tree service giving me a quote to remove a dead tree in my lawn was able to identify.

Now to find the time to trim .... ugh!
