Unless you can provice a better description or a photo to identify this plant, I don't think that you'll get much useful advice. However, I doubt from what you have described that it's bamboo. Does the plant have: 1) hard, woody culms (stalks), 2) leaves on the end of branches (rather than directly connected to the stalk), and 3) hard, woody rhizomes (roots)? If the answer to these questions is "no," it's not bamboo, but some houseplant.
