Sick bamboo?

I have been cutting rhizomes from a friend's yard, and replanting them in my backyard. I know it's not growing (rainy) season right now, so I water every day -- not too much.

One stalk I cut (about 4 1/2 feet tall) is starting to look 'bruised' and sags in the middle, although the lower part is solid. Also, some of the chutes I've planted are turning brown and look like they're dying.

Is my bamboo sick? Or just going dormant for the winter season?

It would be a good idea to post pictures. From what you've described, it's not clear that the plant is bamboo.

I just emailed you the pics, as I'm new here and don't know how to post them in this forum (copy/paste) doesn't work for some reason).

I came home tonight to see the stalk in question snapped in half. It does seem to be growing from the bottom, but there's no activity from the top.
