I've had success with bambusa oldhamii by cutting off the lower branches. I used some sharp long handled loppers. Look for a branch that has arial roots at the base near the culm. Cut the branches back, but leave 1 to 3 nodes on them. Take off the largest leaves, I usually left just a couple of the smallest leaves. Here's a drawing of how I did it.

I have had success with node cuttings of a few species of bamboo. I have tried it, albeit only once, with D. asper Hitam and did not have any luck. My understanding is this is a very difficult variety to propagate. I am going to try again; I think this is my favorite bamboo! If you try, email me and let me know how exactly you do it & if you have any luck. Perhaps between the two of us trying different ways we can figure out how to do it.

I forgot to add, that I had a bucket of water when I tried this method and threw the cuttings in the water for 15-30 minutes before planting them. I don't know if that helped me in my success with my b. oldhamii. I just thought of a christmas tree, how you cut the end and put it in the water. Maybe it helped keep the tissue from drying out ?
