Melocanna baccifera

Posted by kentuck_8b __ (My Page) on

This bamboo produces fruit, which is used for many things and is also edible.

My question is, does the fruit have seed in it like a 'normal' fruiting plant?

Or does it go into bloom and produce seeds at regular intervals like other bamboo?

If no seed is in the fruit, what is it's purpose?

Thanks for your response.

My P. jap has been blooming and seeding since I bought it over 10 years ago, but it is still in a pot, so maybe that has something to do with it.

I had one of my textilis varieties bloom also, but it bloomed and died back, yet survived.

I don't think any of my other varieties have bloomed or at least I didn't notice it if they did.

Again, my question is, does the fruit have seed inside of it, or does the plant(Melocanna baccifera) also produce seed like other bamboos?

RE: Melocanna baccifera

Melocanna produces a fruit that contains a large seed, sometimes germinating on the culm. The fruit is a outsized pericarp that gives this bamboo a tremendous jumpstart---a large cotyledon with large leaves in a question of weeks just sitting on the ground..
