An Interesting Read in Dec. issue of Vanity Fair

Just read a very interesting story which I think is worth passing along. There is a particuliar bamboo that only fruits every 48 years. The natives in this part of the world are well aware of this and try to take the best measures that they can to deal with this horror. (They're literally overrun with rats whenever these bamboos ripen with fruit.)It's also amazing how these people utilize bamboo not only for shelter but for nutrition.

I was unable to copy and paste the story from the web but I highly recommend picking up December's issue. (Julia Roberts is on the cover)

Below is a synopsis on what the story is about.

Enjoy this beautiful weather,

Sue

WAITING FOR THE PLAGUE (pg.204)

Every 48 years, in the remote state of Mizoram, vast swaths of bamboo bloom, spawning a biblical scourge of rats that devour everything in sight. Alex Shoumatoff reports on the race to avert a famine. Photographs by Steve McCurry.
