what makes these holes in my vivax?

i have a nice mature grove of vivax in my garden. the culms are 7-8" in diameter and some have 1-2" hexagonal holes anywhere between 7-12 ft above ground. ive noticed holes in other phyllostachys before (treefrogs love to hang out in them), but none this large or this shape.

whats doing this?

Probably a woodpecker. Im more interested in this 7-8" diameter bamboo you have. Might want to double check your measurements.

LOL you know....as i posted earlier i sat here and made circles with my hands trying to estimate the diameter. i was thinking softball, yet surely bigger. ill double check for you...i am interested in exact measurements as well. it is big...my largest along with moso.

im a man...things like this happen LOL....with flashlight and tape measurer in hand...the largest culms are 4.25-4.50 in diameter. :)

Ok that sounds about right. My second guess would be that somebodies sippin the moonshine and shootin the 22.
