What is the absolute hardiest bamboo?

Has anyone successfully grown bamboo in zone 4? If so, what ways are best to protect it during the winter?

I believe that Phyllostachys nuda, a runner, is one of the hardier bamboos & can be grown in zone 4. Fargesia murielae is a clumping Chinese mountain bamboo and is also very hardy and can grow in zone 4. I have never actually grown in zone 4 (I'm in zone 10) but this is what I have heard. You can at least start researching on these two species and see if they will meet your needs.

Not sure where you live in Utah. I live in American Fork and can tell you that Fargesia rufa has done the best for me. I have Phyllostachys nuda, rubromarginata, and aureosulcata. All of the Phyllostachys have lost their leaves at around 0 F but the Fargesia rufa has held most of its leaves with only minor damage. Any how if you have any questions feel free to ask.
