Fargesia Robusta in Zone 6

Posted by argardener_2008 AR (My Page) on

I will be planting a fargesia robusta in zone 6 close to zone 7 in NW Arkansas. My planting will be nearly full morning sun with some afternoon shade. I will be planting one 10 gallon and some smaller 3 gallons. I am interested if this species is cold hardy enough for my area. Also I am interested if this species can survive full morning sun and partial afternoon shade.
Thanks

I don't think you have anything to worry about. I planted 2 10-gallon fargesia rufa, which I'm assuming has similar cold tolerance to robusta, in my yard here in southern Michigan. The coldest we've got is somewhere between 14 and 20 degrees, and the ground has already froze a little, although it thawed out also. Anyway, they're not quite as green as they were when I bought them in September, but they're doing well. Some leaves are a little yellow, but its holding them nonetheless.

Robusta is not as hardy as rufa. I am wanting to acquire a robusta to test it in my garden but all of the specs and experiences I have talked to people concerning this plant say it doesn't handle the cold as well as rufa. My Fargesia rufa has handled the cold very well and still looks great. I am posting a link to show what my rufa looked like after one year of growth.

Here is a link that might be useful: my bamboo

The Robusta gets completely top killed ever winter here in Detroit zone 6. The F. rufa sizes up quick here and has no problems with are winter or warm summers. It is by far the best clumping bamboo for my climate.

My fargesia rufa seems to be more hardy than my f. robusta and f. scabrida. It has been squashed with snow twice this winter and springs right back after the melt. Nice and green. My other two look awful now.

Any success with Fargesia robusta? I live close by to argardener and was considering replacing my running bamboo hedge/fence with this plant. I love my bamboo but am looking for something which is less invasive and takes less time and effort to maintain.
