I think the largest reported moso is probably around 10 inches while tropical clumpers, especially the ones in the dendrocalamus genus have species averaging around 12 inches with the world record over 15 inches which I read from somewhere. That would equate to over 100ft tall culms. If you're in a tropical climate and have some space, might as well try out one of those giants.

I would be lucky to have a bamboo break 3 inches in my climate.

Both Dendrocalamus gigantea & D. brandisii are said to get to 12 inches in diameter and 100 feet tall.

D. sinicus is now reported as the tallest and largest at 120 feet tall and 12 inches in diameter.

I have the first two but they never get tall here since they freeze back evey Winter.

The largest diameter culm here in a clumper is Bambusa oldhamii which grows to about 5 inches in diameter and 44 feet tall.

Moso(a runner), will get taller and larger but I don' give mine enough roon to grow that large.

I have a photograph I'v framed of D. Sinicus. Its 2 feet by 3 feet glass framed. Its my most favorite photo of bamboo. Culms are up 80 feet tall, one foot diameter.

Simmon Henderson collected a small photo while in Costa Rica at a national bamboo conference. He gave the small photo to me when he came back from Costa Rica. So i had it enlarged to 2' x 3' and framed it.

God bless Simon Henderson. He will never be forgotten.
