I had an SDC that choked on me once; I cut the stem, and the remaining pup didn't survive. If you have enough plants though, I would at least try it.

The cutting I did was to make a vertical slit in the stem near the top, where the leaves were choking. I then pulled that area a bit apart to free up the choked leaves. The plants look good now, but the leaves are very small compared to the original leaves.
