Need suggestions..Banana plant in container

Posted by karen99-gardener 7 (My Page) on

I live in a duplex and have a large front porch. I would love to have a banana plant in a container that would be positoned at the end of the porch. I do not know which plant to purchase nor what size pot. I appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks

What are the growing conditions like (temperature...light, etc)? Is this just for the summer?

You might try:

Musa basjoo (a cold hardy variety that seems to hold its leaves better in the winter than the real tropicals)

Lasiocarpus (Chinese banana--this one produces stunning yellow flowers that last a LONG time) The leaves are unlike those of most bananas (genus Musa) in shape and color (more blue green). Also rather COLD hardy.

Any of the dwarf banana varieties should work.

Ensete maurelli (spelling?)--the one with red/bronze leaves and relatively tolerant of quite chilly temps--stunning!

I live in central Ark., so the weather can go between low 20's to over 100 in the summer. The porch gets alot of sun. I researched Musa Basjoo, and it looks like it would get too large, but may stay smaller in size if it is in a pot. Thanks for your help!
