NPR had a great segment of the show Fresh Air about bananas. I thought ya'll might be interested.

I listened to this twice this morning, between 5-6 a.m. and between 7-8 a.m. As I understood it the cavendish is being attacked by a fungus like the old Gros Michel which it replaced in commerce. I'll be 60 y/o in May and I can remember when bananas were much sweeter than the ones we buy now. With DNA research being what it is today, you would think the big fruit companies would do some genetic altering to breed in fungal resistance. Since the banana is called the world food this is a chance for the United Nations to do something useful.
