No, you can do it now. The days are long enough and sun strong enough so that you can can a decent head start on the season. Remove the plant from the plant, loosen up the soil so that you can see just where the plant is attached. Only remove the pups if you can take as least some roots on the pup itself. Sometimes it is necessary to cut into the mother corm in order to get the pup with roots.--This is harmless to the mother. Good luck!

As njoasis so rightly pointed out,make sure you get plenty of roots,don't do if you can't it is EXTREMELY rare to get one to survive with out some roots.
I actually had one with only 1 one inch root but it made it!
Bananas are amazingly resilient plants!
