Let us know how it goes. Here is zone 7 VA I didn't bother with an winter protection, just let the clump die to the ground. I cleaned up the mess a few weeks ago and now I've got 7 or 8 new pups breaking ground.

If they are anything like last year, they will reach 10' no prob.

and much like my previous plant, it did freeze down the pseudostem. However the base and roots still appear to be ok, so I'm sure things will begin to sprout soon.
I'm gonna go ahead and put a few more pups in the ground this spring, with one against the foundation on a sunny side.

How far underground did you plant the corm?

I made sure that both of mine were planted well below the surface, and both of mine are coming back strong this year, already pushing leaves that are about the same size as they left off last year.

You have made me think! I really don't plant them that deep I guess. In the past the top of the corm was only planted a couple inches or so under the soil level. Maybe four inches at the most. I worried about rot...

Did you really plant one a foot deeper? I will try that too because I brought in all kinds of pups from last year.
I was actually planning on planting a couple of them this weekend.

Yep, they are at least 1ft deep, maybe a bit more, but I used a lot of peat moss, mulch, and compost to fill the hole back in so it wouldn't stop pups from coming up or choke out the plant.

I waited until they were about 3ft tall before doing it just so they would still have a lot of foliage above ground, and both of them are coming back strong. It looks like none of the corm section below ground was harmed at all by -9F last winter.
