They say that you should wait till fall, before you cut off any Pups. There is a special way of cutting them off too. I would look into this before you do. I know that there are alot of websites on this. Yes, your Musa Basjoo can grow much taller than it is!!! I would suggest puting it outside, but you will have to dig it up for the winter, as you live in Zone 7, and the cold will kill it. There are websites that tell you how to store them for the winter. You can remove the pups after they get some size to them. With good heavy mulching your basjoo will come back after winter. It will definitely get taller this summer.

Once the pups get tall enough, you can separate them. I don't think you have to wait until fall. I've done it in July or August, just keep them in a shady spot for the first month while they recover (they will look really sickly until they get some roots going, be patient). Do a search on this forum for some great directions on how to separate pups.

Your musa should survive outdoors just fine with some mulching. It will probably get up to 8 or 10 feet, maybe a little more, if you fertilize enough.
