I don't know if they died?

I covered my banana plants with 2 bags of multch and then placed an unopened bag ontop of them. I recently uncovered them and cut them back. I think i cut it all the way to the bulb or root system because i don't see any circular patterns. What do i do? or is there still a chance they will come back? thank you Jason
