Are they Alive?

I have had 2 Basjoo that were out for the winter, and today I just uncovered them. They grew to be about 3ish feet tall last year and when it was time to cover them, i cut the leaves off and left the stalk about 2-2.5 feet tall. Built a cage around the cage and filled it with mulch, and tryed to cover the cage with plastic.

When I uncovered them today, I pulled all the mulch off of them and left some around the base. But the stalk was dead all the way to the ground.

I know this has been a hard winter here in chicago. But I have never had any luck with wintering over the plants.

I was wanting to know, if there is a chance the plant can still be alive?

Also before the winter came, they did each have 2 pups each, so I know they were spreading.

thanks for any advice
