Uncovered winterized Musa's they all turned to mush

IÂm in Zone 7; I winterize my Musa Basjoo's every year. I've had them for 3 years now and was successful until this year. I cut them down to about 3' and cover them with burlap mulch and leaves. Then cover them with tar paper. This year when I uncovered them they all turned to mush down to the ground. It's been 3 weeks and no new pups. I dug down to the blub it looks good no mush and green. Can they recover or should I go out and get new ones?

You will likely have many small pups coming up soon. Mine were all late this year. I did NO protection. Most all the main pseudostems died, but I see they are all sending up small pups now. Those subterranean corms are tough. Sometimes the growing centers die, but they send out pups from the edges.

We got really cold this winter and the frost went pretty far down.

I am seeing lots of stems now on my 'Basjoos and hopefully the others will wake up too. Bring on the heat and it will get things going!
